‘Smoke’ Signals Exit

Stewart To Retire After 2016 Season; Passes Torch To Bowyer In 2017

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Sept. 30, 2015) – After 17 years competing at NASCAR’s highest level, Tony Stewart has decided his 18th year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be his last. The three-time series champion will retire following the 2016 season, whereupon Clint Bowyer will take the wheel of the No. 14 machine beginning in 2017.

Since 2009 Stewart has held the dual title of driver/owner at Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR). He co-owns the team with Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in North America. Stewart will join Haas as a fulltime owner in 2017, with Bowyer being Stewart’s hand-picked successor to drive the No. 14 car.

“This is a moment every driver eventually comes to terms with, and I know this is the right decision for me,” said Stewart, owner of 48 Sprint Cup victories, 15 of which have come with SHR. “2016 will be my last year in a Sprint Cup car, but it’s not my last year in NASCAR. I love this sport and I love being a part of it, and instead of seeing me in a fire suit on Sundays, you’ll see me in a pair of jeans, and maybe even a pair of khakis.

“I plan to make the most of my final year as a driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and part of that is to ensure that when Clint Bowyer takes over the No. 14 in 2017, he has everything he needs to win races and contend for the championship. I’m very comfortable with this decision and what the future holds for me and Stewart-Haas Racing.”

Bowyer is an eight-time race winner in the Sprint Cup Series and finished second in the 2012 championship standings.
“Today is an incredible opportunity and I’m proud and excited to take over the No. 14 in 2017,” said Bowyer, the 2008 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion. “Whether it’s racing him on Sunday or watching my dirt late model teams race at his famed Eldora Speedway, Tony and I share the same passion for racing. That makes this opportunity a perfect fit for me. I appreciate everything he’s done for me and the sport of auto racing. These are big shoes to fill, but boy am I ever looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a champion’s ride, and have Tony there with me along the way.”

Haas, who formed Haas CNC Racing in 2002 before partnering with Stewart to create SHR in 2009, embraces the transition.

“Tony Stewart has been a game-changer for Stewart-Haas Racing and for motorsports,” Haas said. “I always had an incredible amount of respect for what he could do with a racecar – any racecar, as he’s been successful in everything he’s ever driven. In getting to know Tony Stewart the businessman, I found a very smart person with excellent people skills. He’s extremely valuable to our race team and a strong voice in our sport. His passion for motorsports is unmatched, and I’m proud that his future outside of the No. 14 Chevrolet remains with Stewart-Haas Racing.”

The primary partners currently represented on the No. 14 Chevrolet include Bass Pro Shops, Mobil 1, Rush Truck Centers, Code 3 Associates, Coca-Cola, Jimmy Johns and Haas Automation. Announcements regarding the partnership lineup for the No. 14 team in 2016 and beyond will be made in the lead up to the 58th Daytona 500 on Feb. 21 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
“I have been blessed with fantastic partners throughout my racing career, and I take a lot of pride in the lifelong friendships formed and the great business successes we’ve been a part of,” Stewart said. “I never would’ve accomplished all that I’ve achieved in racing if it weren’t for the support of corporate America. They helped a kid from Columbus, Indiana, reach his dreams and I’ll be forever grateful.”

KYLE BUSCH Earning your Stripes

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 29, 2015) – As the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season heads to the 28th race of the season this weekend, one thing is for certain: Kyle Busch, crew chief Adam Stevens and the entire Interstate Batteries team have been “Outrageously Dependable” in the face of adversity.

So it’s only appropriate as the Sprint Cup competitors head to the third race in this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship playoffs  – Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway – that Busch will have the Outrageously Dependable green-and-white-striped colors of Interstate Batteries along for the ride on his No. 18 Toyota.

There isn’t likely a team in the garage that has faced more adversity this season than the Interstate Batteries team. After losing Busch for the first 11 races after being injured on opening weekend at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, the No. 18 team rallied back in several ways. First, it brought home four wins over the summer months, along with rallying to make it into the top-30 in the driver standings, solidifying Busch’s spot in the 2015 Chase field.

After a solid ninth-place finish in the Chase opener two weeks ago at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, the next bit of adversity struck last week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. With Busch running in the top-10, a right-front-tire issue sent Busch into the outside SAFER barrier and eventually to the garage for repairs. The team returned to the track as quickly as possible, but the result was a disappointing 37th-place finish.

There is some good news on the horizon as the Interstate Batteries team heads to the first cutoff race of this year’s Chase. Busch will head to Dover – statistically one of his better tracks – in hopes of scoring a win, and thus an automatic bid to the Contender Round as one of the final 12 drivers left in NASCAR’s playoffs. However, Busch sits only one point out of the 12th and final transfer spot, so even a solid finish could vault him into the Contender Round that begins next weekend at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Strapped in and ready to go !

The Dover stats for Busch and his Interstate Batteries team are impressive – two Sprint Cup wins, five NASCAR Xfinity Series wins and four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series wins. Busch has led 1,018 laps in his previous 21 Sprint Cup starts at Dover, an average of almost 50 per race.
Busch will look to finish what he started in his first trip this season to the “Monster Mile” back in June, when he had a strong run in just his second event back from injury. He ran third with 30 laps to go before an unfortunate incident with a lapped car caused an accident that ended his race early.

So, as Busch and his Interstate Batteries team try to advance to the next round of the Chase, they look to build on recent strong runs at Dover in hopes of closing the deal with their green-and-white-striped Interstate Batteries Camry Sunday afternoon on the Delmarva Peninsula. Busch and the No. 18 team will need to continue to earn their stripes in order to be a “contender” in the 2015 Chase following Sunday’s grueling 400-miler.

KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

What will be the team’s goals this weekend at Dover?

“We just need to execute as a team. Dover has been a good place for me. We ran really well there in June until we got in an accident late. I know Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and all the Interstate Batteries guys are working hard to have a good car off the truck and get us off to a strong start this weekend and, hopefully, we can finish off a strong run there this time.”

What does it take to be successful at Dover?

“Dover, being a concrete track, is challenging. They’re all a challenge, but Dover is especially so, just because of the way you have to run around that place. The way tires sometimes wear out. The way the rubber gets put down there. You’ve got to be fast through the corner. Two-thirds of your lap time is through the turns rather than down the straightaway, so you definitely have to make sure you have a good-handling racecar – one that’s good in the beginning of the run on low air pressures and one that’s good at the end of the run on high air pressures, and even through traffic, too. Some of the most challenging times are when you’re trying to get through traffic with guys.”
Do you enjoy racing at Dover?

“It’s definitely a fast racetrack. It’s a fun racetrack, too. It makes it interesting when you get to traffic, when you have to pass guys, when you’re kind of falling down into the hole and jumping back up out of the hole to the straightaways. It’s a good place to race. It’s a competitive racetrack and, when the rubber gets laid down, it definitely changes the whole atmosphere and the whole way you run around that place.”

Does going from concrete to asphalt change the way the car handles?

“We don’t run on an asphalt racetrack that’s banked like that or shaped like that. The mile tracks we go to that are asphalt are Phoenix and Loudon, and they are relatively flat. The concrete just changes the feel a little bit, of course, and changes the way you approach the racetrack, too.”

You have two Sprint Cup wins and a competitive history at Dover. What is your outlook with your history there?

“I love that place. It’s fun to race there and it’s a place I’m looking forward to going to with our Interstate Batteries Camry. I went there when I was 18 to race in the Xfinity Series for my first time. It will scare you the first time you race there. You carry so much speed at that racetrack and, for it to be a mile in length and for it to be concrete – concrete surfaces that we race on, anyway, are a little bit slick. It’s definitely a roller-coaster ride and you need to treat it like it’s fun and not to be scared of the place, I think, because you can get so much out of that place. There are two ways about it – you can probably be really, really good there, or really, really bad there. Some days you’re going to be better than others, obviously, with how you can get your car set up compared to the competition.”

Hoosier Tire East’s Bob Summers Named Grand Marshal of NAPA Fall Final Weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Stafford Motor Speedway has announced that Bob Summers of Hoosier Tire East will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 42nd Annual NAPA Auto Parts Fall Final.  Summers will send the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to the green flag for the 150 lap race with the most famous words in motorsports.
Summers, now a Hoosier Tire distributor, began his 60-year career in the tire business in 1955 working for the Firestone tire company in Indianapolis.  During his time with Firestone Summers worked with some of the legends of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway such as Mario Andretti, the Unsers, and A.J. Foyt as well as a host of Grand National, Sprint Cup as it is currently known, drivers.  Summers left Firestone in 1981 and a phone call from Bob Newton shortly thereafter got Summers into the business as a Hoosier distributor.  Summers passion for short track racing is still going strong 34 years later operating Hoosier Tire East out of Manchester, CT.  Currently Hoosier Tire East services local tracks Stafford, Thompson, and Waterford as well as the Whelen Modified Tour, and the Super Modifieds at Star Speedway.
“It’s an absolute honor to be the Grand Marshal of the NAPA Fall Final,” said Summers.  “I hung around racing a lot as a kid and I hung around Firestone a lot and when one of the guys quit, I took his place and the rest is history.  Firestone started phasing out of short track racing and I left in 1981 and then a couple of weeks later I got a call from Bob Newton and we made a deal that made me a distributor.  It’s been a great relationship, Hoosier has great people and they’ve done a lot for me and I’ve done a lot for them also.  I’m looking forward to giving the command and I have to also recognize my wife Connie and my son Robbie.  When I first got started in 1981, I couldn’t have got this business going without their help.”
The 2015 NAPA Auto Parts Fall Final Weekend gets underway on Saturday, October 3rd with practice sessions for Stafford’s Whelen All-American Series divisions, the Legend Cars, and the Whelen Modified Tour.  Action continues on with Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the Whelen Modified Tour cars, along with heat races for Stafford’s weekly divisions and the Legend Cars with action wrapping up on Saturday with feature events for the SK Light, Limited Late Model, DARE Stock, and Legend Cars divisions.  The Legend Cars feature will be a national qualifier event.  The NAPA Fall Final continues on Sunday, October 4th with the NAPA Auto Parts Pit Party from 11am-12noon followed by Stafford’s SK Modifieds® and Late Models joining the Whelen Modified Tour in feature action.
Tickets for the NAPA Auto Parts Fall Final Weekend are on sale now at the Speedway Box Office.  Tickets are priced at $38.50 for adult general admission tickets, $5.00 for children ages 6-14, and children ages 5 and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Reserved seating will be priced at $42.00 for all ages.  All ticket prices include 10% CT Admission Tax.

Mr. Rooter New England Truck Series Make Historic Changes.

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Lorraine Pard
NETS owner Lorraine Pard has made a agreement to sell the New England Truck Series to a gentleman named Marshall Hurley. Hurley felt the playing field was not level, and that rule changes were needed. Hurley instituted a number of drastic changes with short notice, which upset the competitors.
Mr. Vin Beedle ( Mr. Rooter) felt this was unfair to the teams and the drivers who had been playing by the same rule book all season. With the blessings of (ALL) the series drivers Beedle created a new truck series, call the Mr. Rooter Truck Series.
The New England Truck Series and the Mr. Rooter Truck Series are two different organizations.
I do not have any more information on what NETS intends to do going forward.

I sincerely wish Pard and Hurley well in their

endeavors. It's possible/probable that they will start a series that is based at the more Northern Speedways (Monadnock,Star, Claremont, Hudson, Etc.)

MRST intends to race at all 3 Connecticut tracks in 2016 ( 6 at New London Waterford Speed Bowl, 3 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park and 3 at Stafford Motor Speedway with 1 race at Lee USA at October Fest.

The original 2015 schedule had two races left to determine a true champion.

Oct. 10 at Lee USA and at the Thompson World Series on Oct. 16th, 2015

Long Island's #88 Roger Turbush has had a story book season and I hope we have a fantastic finish before the changes in 2016.

As usual I will try to get a interview from a principal on the Race Chatter this Monday Sept 28th at 6:05 pm with more information.

Sunn Scores Victory in USAC DMA Race @ Bear Ridge Speedway, Teammate Pierson Gets the Championship

Ellington, CT: FMR Racing teammates where victorious this past Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway in the USAC Dirt Midget Association, one with the race win and the other with the series championship.
With this being the last race of the season, the feature lineup was determined by time trails and no Dash race. With Adam Pierson in the 76M turning the fast laps in time trials he would have had the pole except for a top four redraw which put Pierson to fourth giving the pole to the 5 of Derek Graham.

The nights feature race was twenty five laps in length with action on each and every one of those laps. With the 5 of Graham on pole followed by the 1W of crowd favorite Ray Miller, the first row was ready to take the green. On lap one, Graham held the point with three wide racing for the top four positions while the 67 of Josh Sunn was now second followed by the 18C of Mike Chaffee and Ray Miller in the 1W now back to fourth. By the time the field came back around for lap two, Sunn in his 67 was now leading with Graham in the 5 running second. Back in the pack was the 76M of Adam Pierson working his way to the front to join his teammate Sunn. By lap eight, Pierson had succeeded in taking the second position from the 5 of Graham while Sunn in the 67 still held the point. The top four was comprised of Sunn (67), Pierson (76M), Graham (5) and the 18C of Mike Chaffee. Just as the 76M of Pierson had passed the 67 of Sunn, the 33 of Tim Gallant spun in turn one which brought out the caution. Since the lap had not been completed, Pierson was moved back to second with Sunn holding first. Back to green and Sunn showed his strength with holding off the pack to maintain his lead while teammate Pierson stayed second and the 5 of Graham holding down third spot. The top four put on a great show at the front while the remaining field ran laps three and four wide along with passing for positions on each lap. As the race leader Sunn in the 67 was clicking off laps, he had begun to lap the tail end of the field. As the last checker flag of the race season waived, it was Josh Sunn in the 67 from White River Junction, VT for the win followed by his FMR teammate Adam Pierson in the 76M for second and the 5 of Derek Graham rounding out the top three.

In other series news, Adam Pierson was award the New England Race Fuel Triple Crown award for scoring the most points during the series three race run earlier this season.

With his second place finish in the last race, Adam Pierson became the 2015 series champion for the second year in a row.

Act Tour Results Invitational 50 Lap at Loudon, NH

    Posted by Wayne G. Barber

MacDonald Tames New Hampshire Again for 4th Invitational Win

Loudon, NH – Eddie “The Outlaw” MacDonald took advantage of a well-timed caution to surge to the lead with 15 laps remaining and win the 7th Annual Bond Auto ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 26.

The Rowley, MA driver started 20th and was running a distant third to Jimmy Hebert and Joey Polewarczyk Jr. when the caution came out for early leader Jeff Rocco’s spin in turn four on lap 31 of the 50-lap event. But MacDonald came to life on the restart, eventually grabbing the lead from “Joey Pole” and holding on through a final caution to beat the impending darkness and score his fourth Invitational win.

“I was a little worried,” MacDonald said. “I didn’t think that there would be a caution, but Hebert and Pole had almost a straightaway on us, so I knew that if I really pushed it hard I would haven’t anything for them at the end. It was kind of a gamble, and luckily for us it worked out and the caution came out at the right time.”

Wallingford, CT’s Rocco surged to the lead on the start from the outside pole and led the first five laps. Hebert then grabbed the top spot from his 10th starting position followed shortly thereafter by Pole. The two then drew away from the field on a long green-flag run, as Pole eventually caught Hebert in lapped traffic and was riding on his bumper when Rocco spun.

Pole outgunned Hebert for the lead on the restart, but MacDonald sliced around both to take the lead on lap 36. The field had one more shot at MacDonald on a restart with six laps to go following John Donahue’s spin, but Pole came under attack from rival Wayne Helliwell Jr. for second, allowing MacDonald to drive off into the sunset.
Pole nipped Helliwell by 0.022 seconds at the finish line for second. Patrick Laperle took fourth while Hebert faded to fifth. Woody Pitkat, Jonathan Bouvrette, Tom Carey Jr., Dillon Moltz, and Alex Labbe completed the top-10.

The ACT U.S. Tour and Série ACT travel to Plattsburgh, NY’s Airborne Park Speedway for the 41st Fall Foliage 200 next Saturday, October 3. It will be the season finale for Série ACT with the Tiger Sportsman/Renegade Team Challenge also on the card. Post time is 2:00pm.

LOUDON, N.H. – Doug Coby bumped Ryan Preece out of the race lead in Turn 1 after taking the white flag and drove away from New Hampshire Motor Speedway Saturday evening with the F.W. Webb 100 trophy in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action.
The contact brought out the yellow and checkered flags for Coby after Preece collected a number of other cars in the aftermath. Preece was scored in 19th at the time the caution came out.
The result was a big boost to the title defense hopes of the driver from Milford, Connecticut, who is back in the game with two races remaining on the schedule. Twenty-five tallies behind Preece entering the event, Coby moved to within 11 of new championship leader Woody Pitkat at 529-518 while Preece slipped to second at 521.
Coby was in control for the majority of the event, but Preece moved to the lead on the Lap 100 restart after the eighth of nine cautions in the event. As they exited Turn 1 of the final lap, Coby got into the back bumper of Preece, sending him up the track.
Patrick Emerling ended up second for his best finish in 67 career starts. Bobby Santos was scored in third followed by Justin Bonsignore and Ron Silk.
Donny Lia, Jeff Goodale, Chase Dowling, Dave Sapienza and Pitkat brought home the top 10.
The F.W. Webb 100 featured 16 lead changes among four drivers. It will air on NBCSN on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. ET.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 4 at Stafford Motor Speedway for the NAPA Fall Final 150.Source: NASCAR Home Tracks Whelen Media Press Release & Getty Image

Cole Carter Enters NEMA Finale at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park World Series of Racing
          Bridgewater, MA

Cole Carter, a USAC open-cockpit mainstay and a member of one of America’s premier racing families, will be in the Northeastern Midget Association field at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park for the World Series of Racing on Saturday, October 17th.
The son of the legendary “Pancho” Carter, Cole will be a teammate of former series champion Randy Cabral of Kingston and Todd Bertrand of Danielson, CT in Bertrand Motorsports entries. He’ll steer the Boston Louie Memorial winning #39 typically driven by Bertrand and Bertrand will run the #74 driven this season by reining NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, Doug Coby and Joey Payne. Coby and Payne both captured 2015 wins in the #74.
Carter will join a strong field led by Cabral, the all-time NEMA winner at Thompson, 2013 Champion and points leader John Zych, Avery Stoehr of Lakeville, Seth Carlson, Jim & Alan Chambers, Bethany Stoehr and Paul Scally of Raynham.
Among current competitors, Russ Stoehr of Bridgewater and Zych are the other previous Thompson winners scheduled to be on hand in the field.
Cole Carter’s racing genes include both grandfathers – Duane Carter and Carl Forberg – and an uncle – the late Dana Carter – as well as his dad Poncho who, in addition to many Midget and Sprint successes, had 17 Indianapolis 500 starts, including a pole run in 1985. Pancho was also the USAC National Sprint Car champion in 1974 and 1976.

Cole has been running USAC periodically over the last fifteen years, climbing to as high as fourth in the 2005 USAC standings. He has also driven Sprints, Silver Crown and Infiniti Pro Series cars. His last starts for Bertrand Motorsports resulted in a runner up effort to Cabral in 2010 at the World Series and a duplicate of that run, finishing second to Cabral in the 2014 World Series at TSMP.
