Respect a Common Courtesy on North East Street Stock Tour

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

After completing two championship events in the inaugural season, the North East Street Stock Tour has seen hard racing at the front of the pack, but with a high level of respect as well.

Chris “Moose” Douton picked up the victory at Seekonk Speedway (MA), after John Hanafin’s exciting blast through the field came up short, due to a mechanical failure.  Douton’s win did not go uncontested though, as Joe Arena filled Douton’s rear-view mirror in the closing laps.

The roles were reversed at the following race, at Speedway 51 (NH).  Arena had the top spot, with as many as five drivers within striking distance at different points of the race, including Geoff Rollins, Patrick Tanguay, Jim Boyle, and Bryan Town.  But Douton gave Arena the most pressure, seemingly glued to Arena’s bumper at times.

Even two weeks later, Arena knew Douton would not race dirty with him, saying “We are all in this together.  There is a good amount of give and take.  There is a lot of respect across the board with these guys.”

With the upcoming event at Monadnock Speedway (NH), another tight, ¼ mile race track, Arena is optimistic of the race, saying “Our regulars are a good mix of guys, and there’s a lot of inquiries from the Monadnock drivers, as well.  It should be a big show, and will only build from there.”

Arena admits the handicapping system adds a unique twist to the series.  The North East Street Stock Tour uses the plus/minus system from the qualifying heats, to set the lineup for the feature events.  In other words, the more cars a driver passes in the qualifying heats, the better starting position that driver will have for the feature.

Arena, who has predominantly been a New London-Waterford Speedbowl driver during his career, sees the touring series as a new challenge, adding “The whole thing is working out perfect.  I enjoy it well, especially with the amount of respect from the drivers.”After completing two championship events in the inaugural season, the North East Street Stock Tour has seen hard racing at the front of the pack, but with a high level of respect as well.

Hot Streak Continues for Derek Griffith in GSPSS

Posted by Wayne G. Barber   Track Report from Jim Snape and photos by simply the Best, Crystal Snape

Star Speedway, Epping, New Hampshire.
6/27/2015
For the third time in five GSPSS starts, Hudson NH hot shoe Derek Griffith took his LCM sponsored Pro Stock to victory lane in the Star Speedway 100.
What looked to be an easy run for the 18-year-old, Griffith, who sometimes led by a straightaway over second place Mike Parks of Walpole NH saw that big lead evaporate when the first of only two caution flags flew on lap 93. The restart tightened the field for one of the most exciting finishes to date.
Griffith sped away on the restart but behind him fourth place Joe Squeglia of Derry NH applied pressure on Dillon Moltz of Waterford CT, as Moltz pressured Parks for second.
Squeglia would squeeze by Moltz for third, but had to give that spot back because of a lap 98 yellow flag for a spin by Cory Casagrande of Stafford Springs CT.
With the checkered flag insight Parks and Moltz made their last attempt to take the win from Griffith. The three ran three wide on the last lap with Griffith gaining a slight advantage and inching ahead for the victory, while Moltz and Parks crossed the line in a photo finish. Moltz would be credited with the runner up spot and Parks was third.
Babe Branscombe of Nottingham NH finished fourth and Squeglia would round out the top five.
Matt Frahm of Hampstead NH was awarded the ARB hard luck award after dropping out of second place on lap 45.
Heat winners were Mike Parks and Derek Griffith.
In victory lane, Griffith said, "We had a pretty good racer tonight. At the end with Mike Parks on one side of me and Dillon Moltz on the other side, we all went in pretty deep and we all came out in one piece, it was just good hard racing. This car never missed a beat, it just stayed the same from lap one to lap 100. Louie gave me a great car, there's no one better than him, he's the best. I could get back to the gas as easily as I ever could hear and I've run here a lot and tonight I've never been this fast. This is just awesome for me and my crew. Now we can go on to Speedway, 51 in Groveton (NH). I absolutely love that place. Last time we were there I had some bad luck with a cut tire on lap 99 and hit the wall so I hope to redeem myself."
Second place Moltz said, "It was good running with Mike (Parks) that was good hard racing, I don't know what the 03 (Squeglia) was trying to do there at the end, but I'm good with a second place, I just want to thank all my crew, my father, my spotter."
Mike Parks commented, "we had a really good car all day, Derek was definitely the class of the field, I had nothing for him. I had one shot on that last restart and we bumped a little bit, but it was a hell of a finish."
P.S. We had Derek Griffith on our award winning "Race Chatter" radio program for a second time in the 2015 racing season on Monday 6-29-15 and he did a outstanding interview and answered all his E-Mail guestions. He is always Welcome, Wayne

    Griffith, Griffith,GriffithYes, 3 out of 5 in GSPSS Series

                       Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Fends Off Parks, Moltz in Green-White-Checker Finish Derek Griffith fended off two late restarts to, and a hard charge by Mike Parks, to pick up his third victory of the season, in the Star 100 at Star Speedway.

Griffith shot out to the lead early, with Matt Frahm in tow.  Frahm seemed to be the only car that could give Griffith a run for his money early, but his Alphacon/Lambert Roofing automobile shut down on lap 45, forcing the Hampstead, NH driver to retire from the race.

Griffith would continue his torrid pace, opening up a straightaway advantage over Mike Parks, who inherited second place after Frahm’s misfortune.  Griffith cut through the field, putting all but four cars a lap down, but his lead would be erased by a caution, brought out by an incident between Jeremy Davis and Cory Casagrande.  Griffith would jump ahead on the restart, leaving Parks in second, while a battle was brewing between Dillon Moltz and Joey Squeglia, Jr.  Both drivers had fought their way through the field, and both were hungry for the victory, as the battle intensified.  A spin on lap 98, setting up a green-white-checker, would see Griffith and Parks again on the front row, with Moltz and Squeglia behind the pair.  Parks would have the advantage on the restart in turns one and two, and Moltz thought about taking the duo three-wide into turn three, but Griffith was too strong, and motored away to victory.

With the Star 100 being Griffith’s third victory of the season, the youngster is still quick to put the credit on other people, saying “Louie has really worked on me as a driver, and us as a team.  Everything all together is finally mashing into one.  I’m just happy to be able to finally win some races.”

Dillon Moltz would work around Mike Parks to grab the second position.  On the closing laps, Moltz said “It was good, hard racing with me and Mike at the end.
I know it was an awesome show for the fans.”

On the three-wide move, Moltz knew it was not the right time, saying “I was three-wide going down the backstretch on that last restart with Derek [Griffith] and Mike [Parks], but I saw it going bad, and I’m not in the points, and they are, so I’d hate to be the guy who takes the point leader out.  That’s just not me.”

Parks would settle for third on the day, and talked about the final restart, saying “It was a win or third place deal, and we finished third.  Derek was the class of the field, tonight.  We had a good car, and everyone ran a good race.”
Babe Branscombe, who was a recipient of the lucky dog on a late-race restart, overtook Squeglia, Jr. for the fourth spot, with Squeglia, Jr. finishing fifth.  Larry Gelinas, the last car on the lead lap, finished sixth, with Josh King, Jeremy Davis, Barry Gray, and Jeremy Harclerode, who never stopped after a lap one spin, completed the top ten.  Griffith and Parks were victorious in their respective qualifying races.
The Granite State Pro Stock Series has a quick turn-around, as the tour heads to the newly-renovated Speedway 51 (NH), for the Twisted Tea Firecracker 151, July 4.  For more information on the Granite State Pro Stock Series, visit www.gspss.net

    Justin Bonsignore Rules At Riverhead

Justin Bonsignore has to enjoy racing at Riverhead Raceway.
    Will Schneekloth/Getty Images for NASCAR
Bonsignore passed Timmy Solomito in Turn 3 on Lap 9 and waited out a rain delay and a late charge by Todd Szegedy to score his seventh career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win and second at his home track.

Bonsignore piloted his No. 51 M3 Technology Chevrolet around some late race traffic to hold off Szegedy and continue of his streak of scoring at least one tour win every year since 2011.
Doug Coby followed Szegedy in third to score his best career finish at Riverhead with Eric Goodale fourth and Woody Pitkat fifth.
Timmy Solomito, who led the first eight laps of the race, followed in sixth while polesitter Tom Rogers Jr. rebounded from having to start the race at the rear of the 28-car field to finish seventh. Ryan Preece was eighth with rookies Vincent Biondolillo and David Sapienza rounding out the top 10.
This was the second career tour win for Bonsignore at Riverhead as the Holtsville, New York, native won at his home track in 2011 in his first career victory.
The race was slowed seven times for caution with Shawn Solomito and Donny Lia involved in the only multi-car incident in the race on Lap 39. The race also featured a 45 minute red flag for rain to set up the final 51-lap sprint to the finish.
After six points events, the championship standings now feature a tie for the lead between Coby and Preece with 251 apiece. Pitkat sits third, just two tallies back of the co-leaders.
The Riverhead Hoosier Tire East 200 is slated to air on NBCSN Thursday, July 2nd at 6 p.m. ET.
